Choosing Your Funds Wisely
How to do your investment research using funds' information on moomoo
As Warren Buffett once said, "Investment must be rational; if you can't understand it, don't do it." If you are thinking about investing in funds, it's better to do your own research first.
However, there are so many mutual funds out in the market. The information overload may make you feel dizzy: How to analyze a mutual fund? What information is truly useful?
To make things easier for you, we're ready to help. You can access helpful fund information on moomoo in two ways:
1. Go to Funds on moomoo. Tap Rankings > Filter to do your research. This feature also allows you to know which funds have performed better than their peers by their returns or RSP volume.
2. Tap Funds > a fund. The Fund Details page offers an overview of the fund, including its performance in different timeframes, portfolio, fund managers, process and operation fees, and more. Let's look at them one by one.
Performance: The charts shown can tell you the fund's monthly, quarterly, and annual returns and how volatile it has been. You can also find its Morningstar rating if it has been established for three years and more. (Learn more from Use star ratings to invest wisely.)
But note that the fund's long-term performance against a benchmark and your risk tolerance also matter.
For example, suppose you have liquidity needs within a year. In that case, a fund with a volatile history may not be a good choice for you because it may take too much time to weather a decline, although past performance is not indicative of future returns.
Portfolio: Position Details can show you what the fund has invested in.
For example, you'd better know the top 10 positions of an equity fund (i.e., a fund mainly invests in stocks) if you intend to make an investment. For a balanced fund, its allocation of stocks, bonds, and other assets is the key information as it tells you how much risk the fund is exposed to a particular asset.
You can access the portfolio information via Fund Details > Analysis > Portfolio, or Fund Details > Summary > Fund Document > Fact Sheet.
The fund documents can give you more details about the fund's objectives and risk factors.
Fund manager and investment style: Unlike passively managed funds that simply track market indices, actively managed funds use strategies that aim to beat a benchmark. In this regard, fund managers and their investment styles are critical factors to consider when choosing actively managed funds.
Generally, picking a reliable fund house, which is usually shown in the fund's name, is the first step. Then you can find more details about the fund manager by Fund Details > Summary > Fund Manager.
A fund's investment style can be accessed in the fund documents. You can select a fund that has the same investment style as you.
Process & operation fee: Suppose you have picked a fund. But you'd better dig a little deeper: How many days will it take to subscribe to or redeem shares? To find the timeline, tap Fund Details > Performance > Trading Rules > Process & Operation Fee.
Expenses can eat into your investment returns. All fees have been deducted from the returns on moomoo, so investors do not need to make another payment. But compared with funds with lower costs, funds that have higher charges must perform better to generate the same returns.
In conclusion, moomoo offers a lot of useful information in the Funds tab for your research on mutual funds. You can also find more relevant educational content in the Learn tab.
