United Natural Foods green on a reddish day. I will still scale into the position further, but it moved far more quickly than I’d considered.

United Natural Foods' declining ROCE trend is worrying, possibly due to new competition or smaller margins. Despite the stock rising 11% in the last five years, if these trends persist, better investment opportunities may exist elsewhere.

"Our performance this quarter exceeded our expectations…" says CEO Sandy Douglas, attributing the strong performance to improved operational execution and near-term value creation initiatives making savings earlier in the year than expected.

The recent insider purchases by the CEO is seen positively, suggesting that he sees value in United Natural Foods shares. This, coupled with the notable insider ownership of the company, indicates a degree of alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

US Consumer Confidence Drops to a Four-Month Low
US consumer confidence slumped to a four-month low in September, dampened by a deteriorating economic and labor market outlook. The Conference Board’s index declined to 103 this month from an upwardly revised 108.7 in August, data out Tuesday showed. The figure fell short of the median estimate of 105.5 in a Bloomberg survey of economists.
