My failures in the weekly challenge and what I can learn from it
First lets get the daily quiz thing out of the way - the answers were usually quite logical and simple to answer, but most of the time if I failed at a guess, it's related to the stock direction prediction. All in all as of 23 Oct 2024, I've gotten 210 out of 270 max points, I also missed the first day of the daily quiz.
Now, time for the main topic. I basically failed the weekly challenge.
Why?
Because I made bad picks for the stocks and the ETFs to invest in, thinking it'll go up.
My usual strategy for an easier win would be just invest in the "safe" stocks like DIA, VOO, or SPY, or even any of the Gold ETFs. But this round I felt adventurous and tried to use a different strategy to see if my line of thought works.
Basically, I targeted the highest growth for the top 100 market cap or net assets for the past 3 months. And it failed.
It failed because of 2 very simple reasons:
1. I never checked the current trend of those stocks, so when I went for the highest growth, it may already be in the downtrend and I'm just riding a slide.
2. The time scope is wrong... 3 months does not matter at all, for all intents and purposes in 3 months the stock could've went on the deep slide THEN it goes back up into a huge green climb. Weekly challenge need results that don't rely on medium-term forward thinking, it needs something that is more volatile if you want a bigger gain, or something very stable but climbs upwards slowly if you just want to pass the weekly challenge and not care about the ranking.
So with that said, guess I am changing my portfolio for the weekly challenge. It sucks since I'm in the red now but better to cut losses to attempt to regain the short-term profits for something that gets calculated per week.
