The company was founded in March 1965, formerly known as Chongqing Heavy Vehicle Research Institute, and is a national first-class research institute. In 2001, it changed its name to Chongqing Automobile Research Institute and was transformed into a technology-based enterprise at the same time. In 2003, it was managed by the State Council's State-owned Assets Administration Commission. In 2006, it was jointly restructured with China General Technology (Group) Holdings Co., Ltd. and became its wholly-owned subsidiary. The main products include engineering and logistics vehicles, special sanitation vehicles and equipment; gas vehicles, hydrogen energy vehicle systems and components; rail vehicle transmission systems, braking systems and key components.
